"OUR WEAPONS OF WARFARE" "And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:" (Ephesians 6:17)In verses 10-18 of this 6th chapter of Ephesians, Paul highlights the reality of our spiritual warfare, urging believers to put on the full armor of God. This includes the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, feet fitted with the readiness of the gospel of peace, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit.Notice here that God’s Word is called the "sword of the Spirit.” It is not your ordinary weapon made with human hands. It is a unique weapon because it is a weapon forged by God Himself. This is why God’s Word is so powerful.Satan retreats before the Almighty because he has never successfully advanced against the point of God's sword. The devil is no match for the Truth of God. His only hope is to convince you and I to lay down our weapon and surrender. And folks, we surrender when we neglect it!The Sword of the Spirit is the only offensive weapon that we are given in this spiritual warfare, but it is abundantly sufficient. The Bible not only fends off attacks, but it also delivers blows. God’s Word condemns our sin, commands us how to live, converts our wicked hearts, and changes our selfish motives.However, it is not having a copy of God’s Word somewhere in our home that has overcoming power. By that I simply mean it is not any help at all to us if it sits idle and untouched on the bedside table, or still sitting in the pretty little box it came in when we purchased it or laying open on the middle of the coffee table so that anyone paying us a visit might see it and be impressed. It is the individual passages of Scripture which are read and reread, searched and studied, memorized and meditated on, and hidden in our hearts in order to parry the tempting thrusts of Satan.Have you experienced its power to deliver from sin, be it worry, fear, pride, envy, or lust? As fallen beings, we can rationalize any sin, but the Word of God cuts through our excuses and delivers us from sin’s deceit and destruction. When we wield God’s Word knowledgeably, we will find that 'Fencing in Faith' brings victorious results in our lives.Friends, take up the Sword of the Spirit today, and carry on fighting the good fight of faith.
