So Much More
Matthew 19:16
“And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?”
For this one who came to Jesus, there was much more at stake than just eternal life in heaven. Yes, in the end he rejected Jesus and missed eternal life in Heaven. But he also rejected a chance to follow Jesus. Some would say he missed the chance of a lifetime. I know he missed the chance of a lifetime. Following Jesus would have cost him something. In obedience to Jesus he would first have to sell everything he had and give it to the poor. But following Jesus always ends up costing one personally? Does not, in some moments of obedience to Jesus Christ mean I must leave behind something or someone? Someone said, “Faith stands for Forsaking All I Take Him”. In full allegiance to Christ there cannot be Jesus and…, it must always be Jesus alone! In Matthew 19:22 when the young man heard the terms Jesus laid out for following Him the Bible says, “he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions”. The Gospel of Mark says, “he was sad… and went away grieved”. I wonder if those who reject Jesus Christ and a lifetime of following Him ever conclude that the reason they are sad, grieved, and sorrowful with life is because they missed out on the fact that with Jesus there is always so much more than just eternal life.
