LESS THAN YOUR BEST
Look out for these punks who delight in telling you things like "tithing" is not for today" and "don't backload works into salvation." If they have their way, you will be encouraged to do almost nothing for God and you will stand in tears at the judgment seat of Christ. Your devout service puts them to shame, so they want to discourage you. It's just that simple.
While it's true that tithing was part of the Old Testament law, it was also practiced BEFORE the law in Genesis 14, so viewing a tenth as a basic guiding principle is not a bad idea. Though tithing is not technically a requirement under grace, cheerful giving is a requirement (II Cor. 9:7), and you probably don't want to explain to God one day why you think that giving less than an Old Testament Jew is cheerful giving.
As for "backloading works into salvation," II Corinthians 5:17 and Matthew 7:20 are pretty clear, as is Ephesians 2:10 and Titus 1:16. A saved man is a changed man, and his works will prove it. How much work and how soon is between him and God, but a mere profession of faith while wallowing in the same old sins is not endorsed by God's word, and you'd do well to steer clear of anyone who thinks otherwise.
This garbage is nothing other than lukewarm Laodiceans trying to feel comfortable in their lukewarmness and getting under conviction when they see zealous believers actually doing something for God. God's instructions are for them to "be zealous therefore, and repent" (Rev. 3:19), not for you to do less than your best. Those people are useless, and you'll be useless, if you listen to them.
