Denying Self? Selfishness?Mark 8:34“And when he had called the people unto him with his disciples also, he said unto them, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.”I am convinced that no Christian can be who God wants them to be apart from denying self. The first step for a Christian to follow Jesus is to “deny himself”. The sin of selfishness is 100% totally opposite of the nature of God. The Bible tells us that God is love and true love is the opposite of selfishness. There is no room in Christianity for selfishness. Selfishness is defined in Webster’s 1828 Dictionary as “The exclusive regard of a person to his own interest or happiness; or that supreme self-love or self-preference, which leads a person in his actions to direct his purposes to the advancement of his own interest, power or happiness, without regarding the interest of others.”The sin of selfishness is a thorough destroyer of relationships. How important is it for you to be personally happy?Do you like to have your own way?Do your feelings get easily hurt? Are you nice to others, and do kind things because it makes you “feel good” or feel better about yourself? In other words, is it still all about “you” when you are nice and kind. What does it really mean for a person to “deny himself”?
