Serving Not To Be NoticedPhilippians 2:7 - “But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:”Note the first phrase in our verse concerning Jesus Christ, “But made himself of no reputation…” Everyone is out to get noticed these days. The internet experts say success hinges on attracting attention and getting noticed. Look at me! Follow me! I hate saying this, but I believe this worldly way of thinking has found its way into the church and church leadership. What about what Christ said in John 12:32 - “And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me.” I also believe that this attitude has also found its way into some marriages and among family leaders. Christ was a leader, but He was not looking to make a reputation for Himself. Instead, He took upon Himself the form of a servant. In Mark 10:45 Jesus said,“For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.” It is a rare find when a husband or wife, or father or mother possesses the combination of not caring about being noticed and willingly serving his or her spouse and family. I teach in marriage and family conferences that we ought to show gratitude and be thankful towards the things our spouse or others do for us. But, if our motive behind serving and being kind to our spouse and family is so they will notice us and what we do, then we are definitely not being a Christlike servant in our marriage or family. Do you live to serve or to be served? Are you like so many others in this world who feel like they are entitled to be served or do you want to be like Christ and take upon yourself the form of a servant within your marriage and family? What do you think Jesus meant when He said in Matthew 23:11-12?“But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant. And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.”
