Understanding The Chastisement Of GodHebrews 12:10-11 -- “For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness. Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.”Why does our Heavenly Father feel it is necessary to chastise His children when they sin? The answer is plainly given in our text.It is for our profit; “that we might be partakers of His holiness” and it would yield “the peaceable fruit of righteousness” in our living. It is tainted thinking to believe that God enjoys or gets pleasure out of chastening His children. It is grievous unto Him and it ought to be grievous unto us. When King David fell under the chastening hand of God for his sin of adultery, he wrote in Psalm 51 “Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions. Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me. Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight:”Here we see it is obvious that God’s chastisement of David is working to bring holiness and the peaceable fruit of righteousness in his heart. There was Godly sorrow in his heart and that Godly sorrow worked repentance (2 Corinthians 7:10). God loves His children too much to leave them in their sin.Hebrews 12:6 - “For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth…”When God chastens us it is proof that we are His child (Hebrews 12:8) and proof that He loves us.
