"BE WHERE GOD IS WORKING! DON'T MISS OUT!"
I often hear preachers promoting revivals and camp meetings by strongly pressing people to come and not miss out, else the opportunity for revival will pass them by because they will have declined to be "where God is working."
Folks, I know that the best intentions might be behind such remarks, but they are false and they are dangerous. Anyone can claim that "God is working" anytime and about anything. Rome has murdered untold thousands of believers under the banner of "God wills it," but God did NOT will it, and it was not God's working. Likewise, fundamentalists often lay claim to the "God is moving" and "God showed up" mantras when there is little evidence that God was even on the premises, much less directing and blessing the services. Sure, the Holy Spirit often moves among His people and blesses their meetings, but we need more than catch phrases and religious slogans for evidence. We need the word of God, and if we settle for anything less, we are walking on thin ice.
The only place that we can be 100% sure of God's working is in the hearts of God's people (Philip. 1:6), and that can happen when you're sitting in the pew of your own home church just as well as it can happen at someone's hyped-up camp meeting. In fact, considering some of the foolishness that I've witnessed at some meetings, I'd vote for your own home church any day, especially when you've been faithful in your own private devotions and haven't quenched the Spirit of God in your life. The notion that you must find out "where God is working" and GO THERE is just plain nonsense, because God is ALWAYS WORKING in the hearts of His people, and He's ALWAYS PRESENT when even two or three of them are gathered together (Mat. 18:20).
"Don't miss the big meeting, else you'll miss God, and He might not pass this way again!" Hogwash! That crap belongs in a Madison Avenue advertising firm, not in a Bible-believing church. Sure, we should have meetings, and, if possible, we should have big ones, but this overly-zealous push, complete with unscriptural reasoning and worldly tactics is NOT the way to do it. God is already working in the hearts of His people, with or without anyone's super-charged, religious celebrity extravaganza. Please note:
"Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ." (Philippians 1:6)
"And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power." (Ephesians 1:19)
"Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us." (Ephesians 3:20)
"For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure." (Philippians 2:13)
"For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe." (I Thessalonians 2:13)
"Make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is wellpleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen." (Hebbews 13:21)
"But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing." (James 1:4)
If you want to be where God is working, I have some good news for you: YOU'RE ALREADY THERE. Stay there . . . and stay out of the way. You just might become a tree PLANTED by the waters that brings forth fruit that pleases God (Psa. 1:3), even if you DON'T make a grand pilgrimage to the next Baptist Mecca. Stay right with God, stay right with your loved ones, stay right with your own local church, and try to bring a few more souls onboard. That's plenty, and that's enough. If there's time and space for a bit more, okay, but DON'T BE INTIMIDATED BY ANYONE OUTSIDE YOUR OWN HOME AND LOCAL CHURCH, and definitely not by anyone on the Internet. Satan is wearing out the saints by the thousands (Dan. 7:25), and he'll use "the brethren" to wear YOU out, if you fail to guard yourself.
