The Sensitivity Of The Spirit
1 Thessalonians 5:19
“Quench not the Spirit.”
As the Apostle Paul closes out his first letter to the Thessalonians he gives them several short phrased admonitions.
One is, “Quench not the Spirit.”
The word “quench” simply means to extinguish. One gentleman prayed in a meeting, “Lord if you would spark a fire in this meeting, then please water that fire.” 😳 I think his intention in his prayer was to ask God to feed that fire, to make it grow! How often, maybe unbeknownst to even our self we quench or extinguish the working of the Holy Spirit in our lives. Because of His holiness the Holy Spirit is very sensitive to sin within our heart. Think about it; a critical spirit, a rebellious attitude, a loose tongue, a gossiping tongue, complacency, apathy, pride, arrogance, and such like and more can quench the Spirit from working within our heart and life. It does not necessarily have to be something we say that quenches the Spirit, it can be something we think! It can be something we listen to; some bad joke, some song, some TV program. All these things and such like can quench the Spirit. He who indwells us when we first believe is with us throughout the Christian journey. Through sin, our own sin, we can quench the Spirit. The believer must be very careful! The Holy Spirit is ever with us. His presence is near and powerful and He seeks to work through us the work of God.
May God help us to “Quench not the Spirit.”
