"Excuse me, Sir!"
In an unusual encounter captured by researchers in Alaska, a black bear was found napping inside a giant bald eagle nest on a military base. These nests—some over 8 feet wide and weighing two tons—are built high in trees and typically serve as safe havens for raptors, not mammals.
Black bears are known to raid eagle nests, sometimes eating eggs or nestlings and forcing young birds out before they can fly. This particular nest had failed earlier in the season, likely making it an inviting rest stop for the bear. Researchers speculate that the bear may have been drawn in by the strong fishy smell—leftovers from past eagle meals—and the elevated, undisturbed shelter.
While this incident seems harmless, such invasions can threaten eagle populations. Bald eagles, once endangered due to habitat destruction and pesticides, have made a comeback thanks to conservation efforts. But human and animal pressures still pose risks.
This rare sighting highlights just how interconnected—and at times conflicting—wildlife behaviors can be, even in protected areas.
