Those OffendedMatthew 19:22“But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions.”John 6:66-67“From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him. Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away?”There are many today that are just as offended at the words of Jesus as these people were in our text. Sometimes those offended will walk away, rejecting His words, seeking ways to silence those who speak them. I have known those who once willingly heard and said they believed but now find the words of Jesus offensive. The words of Jesus can be comforting but they can also be convicting. I am aware that there are people in America today that would love to silence the voice of any who speaks the Bible. They will give room and tolerate some passages, but when the words spoken from the Bible call out their sin, they are offended. From our verse in Matthew we read of a young rich man who was offended at the words of Jesus. He went away sorrowful and sad. John records that some of Jesus’s disciples became so offended that they “went back and walked no more with Him”. The rich young man and the disciples in John represent two very different people groups, those hearing Jesus for the first time and those who have heard Him multiple times. Both were offended at the words of Jesus.Psalms 119:165 says, “Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them.”Will you also be offended and go away?
