At just 14 years old, Ann Makosinski created a flashlight powered entirely by the heat of her hand — no batteries needed. 💡Her inspiration came from a friend in the Philippines who told her she couldn’t study at night and was failing school because her family had no electricity.Ann wanted to help. She knew energy could come from many sources — even from body heat. She began researching Peltier tiles, which generate electricity when one side is heated and the other is cooled.Ann realized that placing a warm hand on one side and letting the air cool the other could generate enough power for an LED light. With this concept, she designed the Hollow Flashlight — a hollow structure that lets air flow through, keeping the outside cool while the inside warms from the hand.In 2013, at just 15 years old, she won the top prize in her age group at the Google Science Fair. Her simple yet brilliant invention opened new doors for sustainable, off-grid energy solutions.
