Lost!
Luke 19:10
“For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.”
This word “lost” and in the context for which Jesus used it in this text has seemed to dropped out of the list of words used today among Christianity and preachers. What did Jesus mean when He said, He came “to seek and to save that which was lost”?
“Lost from what”?
“Saved from what”?
That last statement was what a co-worker of my wife’s said when she came to work the morning after she got saved and announced to her co-workers, “I got saved yesterday.” The co-worker was an outstanding member of a local Methodist church, and replied, “Saved from what?”
One used to hear parents and others request prayer for their children or loved ones, “Pray for (insert name) they are lost.” The most famous of all Christian hymns has a line in the first stanza, “I once was lost, but now am found…” A person has to see themself lost before they can cry out to the only One, Jesus, who can save them!
It is time the church and us preachers insert the Bible word “lost” back into our vocabulary of Bible words used. It seems that instead of proclaiming it is people who are lost, it is the word "lost" that is lost!
