"AS A LOVELY SONG" "And, lo, thou art unto them as a very lovely song of one that hath a pleasant voice, and can play well on an instrument: for they hear thy words, but they do them not." (Ezk. 33:32) This verse is often misused to preach against an over-emphasis on music in churches, and particularly against certain kinds of music that tends to entertain more than edify. While the music issue is an issue of concern, that's not what the verse is addressing. Ezekiel was not a performer, he was a prophet of God, yet God said that he was UNTO THEM as something else. That is, the people had trained themselves to look for entertainment and drama in the preaching rather than the substance of God's truth. It has nothing to do with music in the church, but rather with the heart attitude towards the preaching. And this is true with both the listeners and the preacher. The listeners often chalk up the message as a good one just because the preacher ran around the room and yelled a lot, and the preacher ran around the room and yelled a lot because that's what the people want to see and hear. All of this is usually chalked up as a "lively" service, although, far too often, very little spiritual life from God's word is given (John 6:63; Heb. 4:12). It is substituted with religious theatrics. So, as God told Ezekiel, people go away unchanged, maybe FEELING good, but not really being any better than when they arrived. The WORD OF GOD must change the heart, else it's nothing more than a lovely song.
