"STRIKING OUT" WITH A SERMON?
I read a post where a man basically claimed that every sermon should be preached with the goal of seeing visible results during an invitation, else the preacher has struck out. I hope the Lord returns soon, because I seriously don't know how much more stupidity I can take. Naturally, no scripture was given since there is no scripture to support such fundamentalist nonsense.
When I preach the word of God, I have FAITH in the power of God's word to do a lasting work in the hearts of those who hear (Rom. 10:17). I need to SEE nothing, since true faith concerns things NOT seen (Heb. 11:1). I might give an invitation, and I might not, but I NEVER strike out when the word of God is preached (Isa. 55:11). Of course, that makes no sense at all to the serve-by-sight fundamentalists who have no faith at all in God's word or in the convicting power of the Holy Spirit. It's all about PUSH, PUSH, PUSH and get a profession . . . make sure you SEE something before you go home, something that you can brag about and wear as a divine stamp of approval. Forget about walking by faith! Make something happen, something VISIBLE that requires no faith at all! Then all the carnal Laodiceans can go home feeling good about SEEING something at church! Absolutely sickening! ". . . when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?" (Luke 18:8) It sure ain't looking like it. Like the unsaved Jews of Paul's day, carnal fundamentalists require signs, but serious Christians walk by faith.
