WHAT IS A SPIRITUAL JEW?
I once had a Campbellite tell me that Satan hates the word of God and does not have any favorite Bible verses. The guy couldn't have been more blind. Satan LOVES the word of God, he has MANY favorite verses, and he uses them often. Just read Matthew 4, if you doubt it.
A couple of his favorite verses are Romans 2:28-29: "For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh: But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God."
Another one is Galatians 6:16, where Paul says, "And as many as walk according to this rule, peace be on them, and mercy, and upon the Israel of God."
From the wording of these two passages, many assume that God is no longer interested in literal, physical Jews, but only in spiritual, born again Christians. Hence: replacement theology, where the church replaces Israel and all of Israel's national promises are spiritualized and given to the church. Huge mistake.
Paul's point in both passages is that being a physical Jew offers no spiritual benefit, and certainly not after Calvary. Jesus' words "It is finished" (John 19:30) meant something, so for circumcised Jews to continue in their self-righteous belief that their adherence to the law of Moses could save them was vanity. Christ ended the law and now offered salvation from sins through his blood atonement. Yet, they still clung to their dead law. So, Paul was stating the fact that God looks on the HEART for true, regenerate, SPIRITUAL circumcision (Col. 2:11) rather than on the outer flesh for physical circumcision. In both passages, a CONTRAST was being made between unsaved Jews and saved Jews, not between lost Jews and saved Gentiles. Nowhere does either passage say or suggest that God is finished with literal Israel as a nation and that the true Israel is the church. The passages deal with contrasts between saved and unsaved Jews, not replacement theology, which is apparent to anyone who takes the time to read the context of the verses. A "spiritual Jew" is a saved Jew, and if you want to apply the term to saved gentiles because of Colossians 2:11, suit yourself, but that still doesn't replace Israel with the church. Paul made a clear division between Jews, gentiles and Christians in I Corinthians 10:32, and clear over in Revelation we find Jews, Israel and Jerusalem mentioned numerous times, clearly indicating that the church hasn't replaced Israel with "spiritual Jews."
