THE BIBLE AND NUCLEAR WAR There are several portions of scripture that seem to speak of a nuclear explosion, or at least something very similar. Speaking of the Great Tribulation, Joel 2:30-31 says, “And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke. The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the LORD come.” Some believe the “pillars of smoke” might refer to the mushroom clouds produced in atomic blasts. Zechariah 14:12 offers an interesting description of a “plague” that falls on those who fight against Jerusalem: “And this shall be the plague wherewith the LORD will smite all the people that have fought against Jerusalem; Their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall consume away in their holes, and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth.” In II Pet 3:10 we read that “the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.” The phrase “the elements shall melt” is especially interesting since this is what happens in a nuclear blast. Revelation 8:7 speaks of a third part of the trees and all the green grass being burned up, something that could easily happen in a nuclear war. It is also worthy to note that many metals would become radioactive after a nuclear explosion. This might shed a little light on James 5:2-3 and Isaiah 2:20: “Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten. Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days.” (James 5:2-3) “In that day a man shall cast his idols of silver, and his idols of gold, which they made each one for himself to worship, to the moles and to the bats.” (Isa. 2:20)
