Just Sharpen The AxeEcclesiastes 10:10“If the iron be blunt, and he do not whet the edge, then must he put to more strength: but wisdom is profitable to direct.”The book of Ecclesiastes was written by Solomon and is a recording of his findings from searching for the purpose of life that is “under the sun” (Ecclesiastes 1:3). There are many good things that can be taken away from a study of this book. In our verse we find out what most people should already know, a sharp axe means there will be less effort from the one working with the axe. Spiritually speaking, we that are Christians ought to take time to sharpen our spiritual iron.In your service for the Lord do you ever feel like you are pounding away at it, but there is not much being accomplished? Maybe what you need to do is stop pounding for a while, and sharpen your blade!I remember when we used to cut wood to heat with and often the first thing I would see my dad do was sharpen the chainsaw. Even machinery needs sharpening and maintenance. The Christian who starts their day with the Lord, studying His Word, seeking Him and His will through prayer is a Christian who is maintaining a sharp blade. Maybe you need an extended time away of rest, reflection, and recovery. It is never wasted time when we stop and sharpen our spiritual axe.
