While taking her two- and four-year-old children on their first camping trip, Kate Tovsen (Cloud Appreciation Society Member 64,308) saw Stratocumulus stratiformis undulatus clouds roll over the woods near Ely, Minnesota, US. The rippling waves of the undulatus variety of cloud form as a result of wind shear: the air above and below the cloud layer moving at different speeds, or in different directions, or both. And when the clouds also resemble a thick layer that is spread across the sky, we define it as the stratiformis species. The clouds appeared just before bedtime, Kate told us, on the first night of the camping trip – like a gently ruffled blanket pulled across the sky to wish Kate and her intrepid campers a safe night’s sleep.
