Righteous Anger
Mark 3:5
“And when he had looked round about on them with anger, being grieved for the hardness of their hearts, he saith unto the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it out: and his hand was restored whole as the other.”
On this particular day (of our text) Jesus went into the synagogue and met a man who had a withered hand. Mark 3:2 says, “And they watched him (Jesus), whether he would heal on the sabbath day, that they might accuse him.”
The “they” here must have been the scribes and Pharisees. Jesus had a question for them.
Mark 3:4 “And he saith unto them, Is it lawful to do good on the sabbath days, or to do evil? to save life, or to kill? But they held their peace.”
Jesus knew their intentions. This is what brought on the anger of God. They had no mercy on the broken and hurting and needy. Jesus was justified in His anger towards these religious leaders. Fast forward in time to when Jesus Christ comes again. For the Christian, that day will be pleasant and glorious. But for the unsaved and deniers of God it will be a different story.
2 Thessalonians 1:7-9
“And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power;”
God was right in His anger towards these that day in the synagogue. He was right in His anger when He overthrew the tables of moneychangers and cast out of His house of prayer those who sold and bought (Matthew 21:12, 13). And He will be right in His anger when He gets vengeance on His adversaries when He comes again. The anger of God is always righteous anger.
