"AS I HAVE LOVED YOU" "A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another." (John 13:34)Loving your fellow man was taught throughout the Old Testament which included both loving your neighbor as well as your enemies. These truths were taught in Leviticus 19:18 and elsewhere. So, the command to love one another wasn't new in that sense. Then exactly what did the Lord Jesus mean when He said, "A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another"? A closer look at those 5 little words that follow reveal Heaven's command on how you and I are to love each other. Note Jesus' words, "AS I HAVE LOVED YOU." (caps mine)What kind of love is that? It's this: Jesus not only loved His neighbor as Himself...JESUS LOVED HIS NEIGHBOR MORE THAN HIMSELF!Oh my, what love the Lord has for you and me. His soul is ever warmed with thoughts of each of us. Yes, all of us are near and dear to the loving heart of Jesus Christ. His love is not only the giving kind; it's the forgiving kind as well. His love is expressed to us not only in His kind words but embraces us because of His Kingly Work. It's the love that Christ showed and showered upon each of us; not because we were NICE, but because we were NASTY (Romans 5:8). You know, we can love each other like that when we give and forgive. We too can offer a kind word to another by proclaiming our Saviour's Story. Anyone can love those that are NICE, but how about loving those that are NASTY?Friends, did not His work ON Calvary prove that our Saviour LOVED US MORE THAN HE LOVED HIMSELF? Yes, it did, oh yes indeed. Then surely, we too can love others more than we love ourselves!
