When you are in the state of ‘l o s t’ and without Christ, God said you are dead in sins. This is why you must be b o r n a g a i n. You are b o r n with a sinful nature and the only way to remedy this problem is to born again. If not, you will die one day as a l o s t person or as a person dead in sins and that means you have no desire to have eternal life which is in Christ Jesus.
