ISAIAH 14, EZEKIEL 28, AND THE FALL OF LUCIFER
Overlooking the context of Isaiah 14 and Ezekiel 28 is a common mistake that many make when teaching about the fall of Lucifer. While both of those chapters do offer some information about the devil's original state and his fall, the devil is NOT the immediate context of either chapter, and some of the material likely refers to his future as the Antichrist rather than his past. But, in context, the material in Isaiah 14 is primarily a "proverb against the king of Babylon" (Isa. 14:4). While the LORD certainly addresses the proud spirit of Satan in this proverb, the whole passage is not exclusively about Satan. Likewise, the passage in Ezekiel 28 is primarily a "lamentation upon the king of Tyrus" (Ezk. 28:12), not a history of the devil. SOME of the devil's history is certainly found there, but nothing in the passage tells us to apply every word and phrase to the devil. Yet, this is precisely what many careless gap theorists do in their haste to find building materials for the "pre-Adamite" earth that they imagine to exist between Genesis 1:1 and Genesis 1:2. There is no record of any mountains, clouds, stars, precious stones, stones of fire, musical instruments, thrones, merchandise, nations, kingdoms or cities anywhere in Genesis 1, yet we hear many gappers teaching that all of these things and much more were a part of the "pre-Adamite" earth over which Satan ruled in Genesis 1:1 before he fell in the gap following Genesis 1:1. Then more building materials are needed, so they run to II Peter 3:5-6 and claim that Peter is referring to Lucifer's flood instead of Noah's flood! Some even claim that Satan ruled over a reptile/dinosaur kingdom on a pre-Adamite earth. I recently heard one of them suggest that you can't be a real dispensationalist or even a real Bible believer without signing on to the gap "fact."
Some of you people have been preaching to your own choir and admiring your own wild interpretations for so long that you are totally out of touch with reality and with how incredibly foolish you look while claiming to be "Bible believers."
There is NOTHING in the word of God that gives the devil a history anywhere or anytime before Eden (Ezk. 28:13; Gen. 3). Is it possible that he existed before Eden? Maybe, but there is no scripture that says this, so there is no scriptural basis for constructing a "pre-Adamite" earth over which the devil ruled. This is all conjecture at best, and running to Ezekiel 28 and Isaiah 14 for building materials is a blatant violation of one of the most basic rules of sound Bible study: THE RULE OF RESPECTING CONTEXT. Apparently, some of the gappers have exempted themselves, at least where their gap "fact" is concerned.
Now, in all fairness, if I were going to embrace the gap theory, I would simply say that there seems to be something there, maybe something regarding Satan and his angels, but I'm not sure since the Bible doesn't give much detail. I would leave it at that, and I sure wouldn't call it a "fact" and divide believers over it by exalting my unproven views while making disparaging remarks against those who disagree.
