View MoreNewly released report says homicides dropped nearly 60% in Denver in 2025 by: Alliyah Sims May 13, 2025 DENVER (KDVR) — Homicides are down nearly 60% in Denver so far this year, according to the newly released report by the Major Cities Chiefs Association. It’s a significant drop from last year and one of the biggest declines in violent crime rates in the country. Aurora crime rates trend downward as residents grapple with deadly shooting “Violent crime is just about reducing in every city, but we were the city in which it had declined the most,” said Denver Police Chief Ron Thomas. Thomas says he is proud to have that distinction, and it speaks to the hard work of his officers. “We’ve been able to see these significant reductions in crime without over policing communities,” said Thomas. “It’s one of the things we have understood was important and we need to be responsive, but we need to make sure we’re investing as much as we’re enforcing.” New data released reveals a significant decline in homicides in Denver during the first quarter of the year. Denver’s homicide rate dropped by 58%. There have been 13 homicides so far in 2025, while there were 30 at this point last year. “Crime has been going down in Denver for the last couple years. I understand the people don’t necessarily feel that way. I think that’s because one of the reasons why perception doesn’t always match reality is because your perception is often driven by what you see. Even though the numbers may be suggestive of lower crime,” said Thomas. “If you see open drug use, if your neighborhood restaurant or grocery store has to close because of theft — I think that impacts your perception. If you go into your local drug store and everything is locked behind the counter,” Thomas continued. “I think those kinds of things impacts your perception of safety. So recognizing that, understanding we have to address some of those quality of life issues, also working with business owners and improving our response to retail theft, I think is going to be helpful in changing that perception.” Lyft asks Gov. Polis to veto rideshare safety bill as companies threaten to leave Colorado Thomas credits the success to help from the community, legislation changes and partnerships with community groups like the Struggle of Love Foundation. “They are often out after a shooting and talking to involved parties and making sure there’s not any kind of retaliation. So, I think with the effects of that, we’ve only had two gang-related shootings this year that resulted in homicides. There were no follow-ups after that,” said Thomas. “So, I think that has been effective in reducing a lot of our gang-related violence.” Thomas says another group that has been a big help is East High School Students Demand Action, an advocacy group. “They have young people that testify on the hill and really do a lot of advocacy work as it relates to gun violence. I’ve worked with that group for about four years and they do a lot of tremendous work in introducing bills and getting bills to pass,” said Thomas. “They are responsible for a number of historic bills that are currently in effect today. So, I think that’s another thing helping us drive down those violent crime numbers.” Sexual assault was one of the few crimes that increased.
