Why Do People Lie?Ephesians 4:25“Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another.”Why do people feel like they have to lie?In this verse all Christians are admonished to put away lying and speak the truth with our neighbors. Why does a Christian ever feel like he or she has to tell a lie? Lying is the opposite of who Jesus Christ is and all that He represents. John 14:6 reminds us that Jesus is “…the truth…”. John 17:17 reminds us that the Word of God is “truth”; “thy Word is truth”. When Jesus was speaking to some of the Jews of His day He said in John 8:44“Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.”Telling a lie does not necessarily make one a sinner. A person is a sinner (Romans 3:10, 23) whether they lie or not. People lie because they are sinners. The Bible gives a very sobering truth about a person whose lifestyle is characterized by lying. Revelation 21:8 says, “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”May God help us to tell the truth and lie not!
