These arched forms of Altocumulus clouds spotted by Dale Peterson (Cloud Appreciation Society Member 34,214) in the setting Sun over Cherry Creek State Park, Denver, US appear rather like eyebrows. They indicate churning, turbulent airflows as strong winds pass over the Rocky Mountains. Like the atmospheric equivalent of tumbling water downstream of a rock in a fast-flowing river, these cloud features are short lived and dynamic. They’re also without any official name. The last time a new cloud classification was added to the World Meteorological Organization’s International Cloud Atlas was in 2017. It’s about time for another, don’t you think? We consulted Latin scholar Rick LaFleur, Franklin Professor of Classics Emeritus at the University of Georgia, US, who suggested the term supercilium, which is Latin for ‘eyebrow’. Altocumulus supercilium. What’s not to like?
