Fishing For ComplimentsProverbs 25:27“It is not good to eat much honey: so for men to search their own glory is not glory.”Proverbs 27:2“Let another man praise thee, and not thine own mouth; a stranger, and not thine own lips.”I believe a job well done deserves thankful appreciation. But, have you ever considered why you do what you do?Why do you sing that special song at church? Why (preachers) do you preach? Is it to get praise?Let’s go further with this question. Why do you fix that special meal or do something nice for your family?Do you ever search out your own glory?Let me ask it this way, do you ever fish for a compliment? Can I be honest and admit that I have done this? After the sermon, I have asked my wife, “How’d I do?” I believe we fish for compliments because we love self too much. It is an ego thing. We have not denied our self nor fully died to self (Luke 9:23). Fishing for personal praise is a self-thing! As our verse states, when you get that kind of glory or that kind of praise it just does not settle well in your soul. It is like eating too much honey at one time. It’s sweet when it is on the tongue but it does not settle well once it hits your stomach.God keep us from self-glorification and God keep us from fishing for compliments!Let us die to self-glorification!
