Why Are Ye Troubled?Luke 24:36-39“And as they thus spake, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you. But they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they had seen a spirit. And he said unto them, Why are ye troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your hearts? Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have.”The scene of our text is the day of the resurrection of Christ. He is appearing unto the disciples and speaks peace unto them. But instead of being filled with peace they were terrified, affrighted, and troubled, supposing Jesus was a spirit. Jesus prods their heart; “why do thoughts arise in your hearts”? The meaning of the word “thoughts” tells us that the disciples had lots of inner reasoning and questions. Oh, does this not sound exactly like us today?! Instead of rejoicing and being filled that we follow a risen Saviour we allow ourselves to become troubled about the issues of life that we cannot find an answer for. God help us to put into practice the admonition of the Word of God found in Philippians 4:6-7 “Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”There will always be questions in life for which we cannot find an answer to satisfy us. We must not allow our anxious feelings to overwhelm us but take them to the Lord in prayer with thanksgiving and claim the promise that God will keep our hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
