I Wonder If He Could Smell ItJohn 12:3, 7“Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment…Then said Jesus, Let her alone: against the day of my burying hath she kept this.”When Mary came in and anointed the feet of Jesus with pure spikenard everyone in the house knew what was going on because of the smell. What they did not know was why Mary did this. When Mary anointed Jesus’s feet it was only about six days before He would willingly die on the cross. Mary knew Jesus came to die for her and there was something she wanted Him to know. From a pure heart of worship Mary was preparing His body for burial and she wanted Him to know she loved Him. It is said the odor of pure spikenard can linger for days.Six days later, there on the cross, with the weight of all humanity’s sin I believe it is very likely Christ could still smell the odor of the ointment of spikenard. It would have reminded Him that He was loved.Does Christ know that you love Him?How does He know?
