WHAT IS A REPROBATE? Basically, a reprobate is someone whom God has rejected due to their rejection of Him and His words. The word is found only seven times in the Bible (four singular, three plural), and each occurrence concerns lost people. The first occurrence is Jeremiah 6:30, which helps to establish the definition: "Reprobate silver shall men call them, because the LORD hath rejected them." Reprobate silver would be silver with so much impurity that a refiner would count it worthless and wholly reject it. God's point in Jeremiah 6:30 is that His people had become so sinful that He could find no good "metal" in them; therefore he rejected them and they ended up in Babylon. The other six references are in the New Testament (Rom. 1:28; II Cor. 13:5, 6, 7; II Tim. 3:8; Tit. 1:16), and none of them indicate that a saved person can be a reprobate. In fact, the Romans reference is in the context of people whom God had completely given up. It literally says UP, UP, and OVER (body, soul, and spirit - vss. 24, 26, and 28). The word "reprobate" itself is from the Latin "reprobare," the "probare" indicating "approval," but the "re" indicating REVERSE. Therefore "reverse approval" or DISapproval. Hence: rejection.
