The Sin of LyingProverbs 12:19, 22 - “The lip of truth shall be established for ever: but a lying tongue is but for a moment… Lying lips are abomination to the LORD: but they that deal truly are his delight.” Why do people think they have to lie? Maybe they feel the need to lie to get themselves out of the trouble they believe they are in. Maybe they lie to make themselves look better. If so, that is an indication of another sinful characteristic, selfishness. Some people are habitual liars, meaning they just lie all the time. Our text teaches us that honesty establishes and builds trust. Our text also teaches us how the LORD feels about lying. To Him it is an abomination or a thing disgusting. God also has this to say in Revelation 21:8, “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.” In this verse God puts the habitual liar in the category of being unsaved, therefore their future eternal home is the lake of fire or Hell. But note, they that live and work truth are the LORD’s delight.
