That Which Is NotProverbs 23:4-5 -- “Labour not to be rich: cease from thine own wisdom. Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not? for riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven.”One can find in personal study of the Bible more than a few references of warnings about the desire of riches. Riches can fall under the spiritual heading of “that which is not”. Riches do not last forever and unless used for God’s good and glory they have no eternal weight, purpose, or spiritual bearing. In the context of our text the setting of your eyes on money, or the desire of, or literally the flying after money is the warning. But, we are taught in the Bible that money itself is not evil or bad. Remember in 1 Timothy 6:10 it is the “love of money” that is the root of all evil. Now for application we see our text today presents a question, “Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not?” Think about that one question. Is there anything in your life that you have set your eyes upon or you have flown after, that at the end of your life it will have no eternal purpose at all? This gives us plenty to think about.
