Near Picacho Peak in the Sonoran Desert of Arizona, US, Adrienne Katz (Member 59,544) gazed up at parallel cloud paths zigzagging over a wide expanse of the sky. Known officially as Altocumulus stratiformis undulatus, the rippling lines trace the rise and dip of shearing airflows high above. Had Adrienne walked down the length of the cloud paths, she’d most likely have been moving perpendicular to the high winds that caused their undulating forms.
