Onward!!1 Samuel 7:12 “Then Samuel took a stone, and set it between Mizpeh and Shen, and called the name of it Ebenezer, saying, Hitherto hath the LORD helped us.”The prophet Samuel wanted all Israel to remember how the LORD had secured a great victory for them against the Philistines. So he raised up a large stone and named the stone Ebenezer, which means stone of help. They all knew it was the LORD who had helped them and gave them the victory that day, and it would be through the LORD’s help that they would go forward. The word “hitherto” is like the two words now and onward wrapped up in one word! God gave the victory today and we can go onward knowing God will give victory in the future.At the age of 22 Robert Robinson wrote the great hymn Come Thou Fount Of Every Blessing (1758). The second stanza references the scene for our devotion.“Here I raise my Ebenezer;hither by thy help I’m come;and I hope, by thy good pleasure,safely to arrive at home.Jesus sought me when a stranger,wandering from the fold of God;he, to rescue me from danger, interposed his precious blood.”Amen!
