A Broken & Contrite HeartHow could he do such a thing?!How could King David, a man that is supposed to be a man after God’s own heart, commit adultery, then lie and commit murder to try and cover up his sin?The Biblical answer is found in Jeremiah 17:9 “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?”From a human standpoint David had committed multiple sins. Some would treat them as “unpardonable sins”. But God did not leave David in his sin. God sent Nathan the prophet to confront David with his sin. David saw he had sinned, he admitted it before God, he accepted God’s judgement, and he repented. Psalm 51 is the song of repentance that David wrote from that moment. He wrote in Psalms 51:17 “The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.”David stood before God with a broken and contrite heart.A broken and contrite heart God will not despise.A broken and contrite heart God will forgive and bless.A broken and contrite heart does not blame someone else.A broken and contrite heart takes full, personal accountability for their sin.In the same song David confessed “Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight…” (Psalm 51:4). David came to a place with his sin that few come to, a broken and contrite heart, a heart full of repentance. Obviously, Godly sorrow worked great repentance in David’s heart(2 Corinthians 7:8 - 12).
