Are You Ready For “This Night”?Luke 12:19-20 -- “And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry. But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?” Here Jesus tells us about a man who thought he was ready for “many years”, but in reality he was not even ready for “this night”. He had worked hard and his ground had brought forth plentifully (Luke 12:17). He thought within himself and prepared for the future (vs. 17, 18). This all gave him peace that all was well for the future (v. 19). So what was this man’s problem? He was thinking only “for himself” and not thinking “toward God”. Luke 12:21 “So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.” Churches are full of people like this man. For self they are rich and ready for the future, but toward God they are poor and will be found wanting. Such people are ready, earthly speaking, for the “many years” to come, but spiritually speaking, they are not even ready for “this night”. Which future are you preparing for?
