CHRISTIANS IN THE WORKPLACE
Here are a few tips on how to survive and maybe even thrive in the workplace without blowing your Christian testimony . . .
DON'T DRAG
Do your job. In fact, due to Jesus' extra mile rule (Mat. 5:41), do MORE than your job. Be known as a good worker who doesn't mind doing a little extra now and then. If you get behind due to distractions like conversations, extra restroom time or personal phone calls, then look for ways to make it up. Have the testimony of being a worker who, at the end of the day, has put in a fair and honest day's work and with a little extra for the glory of God. "So built we the wall; and all the wall was joined together unto the half thereof: for the people had a mind to work." (Neh. 4:6)
DON'T BRAG
If you're doing a good job, people will know it, so there's no need to sound a trumpet (Mat. 6:2). Do your job well and let all praise come from the lips of others. "Let another man praise thee, and not thine own mouth; a stranger, and not thine own lips." (Pro. 27:2)
DON'T NAG
Things often do not go well in the workplace, but you receive your paycheck regardless. Rejoice in that and don't be known as a chronic complainer. You took the job for the purpose of earning a paycheck, so earn your check and be thankful. "Do all things without murmurings and disputings: That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world." (Plp. 2:14-15)
DON'T GAG
Don't make yourself sick with work. It's not worth it. Give your employer an honest day's work and then go enjoy your life. There are things in the workplace that you cannot change, so don't worry about them. Change what you can, when necessary, and forget the rest. Workplace stress is a major cause of bad health, and you'll work yourself sick, if you don't learn to unwind, relax and refresh your mind. I recommend Philippians 4:6-7: "Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus."
In this day and age of lukewarmness and mediocracy, it's really not that hard to be a standout worker, and following those four simple tips can help you to do just that. Remember the words of Jesus: "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven." (Mat. 5:16)
