Betrayed With Affection
Matthew 26:48-49
“Now he that betrayed him gave them a sign, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he: hold him fast. And forthwith he came to Jesus, and said, Hail, master; and kissed him.”
Luke 22:48
“But Jesus said unto him, Judas, betrayest thou the Son of man with a kiss?”
Judas betrayed the Lord with a kiss. A kiss is a token or greeting of affection. With this thought in mind we can now better understand what our Lord meant when he said, “Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.”(Matthew 7:22, 23).
Titus 1:15-16 says, “Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled. They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.”
It is possible to sit in church and sing the great hymns of the faith and outwardly confess Christ, but inwardly never know Him. We have no way of knowing who is truly saved or not, but Jesus knows.
John 6:70-71
“Jesus answered them, Have not I chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil? He spake of Judas Iscariot the son of Simon: for he it was that should betray him, being one of the twelve.”
And Judas knew what he was doing. He had planned it all out. He had “covenanted with them” to deliver Jesus over to the enemy (Matthew 26:15).
