God’s Reasons For Giving Us ProverbsProverbs 1:1-4“The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel; To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding; To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity; To give subtilty to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion.”With most of the books of the Bible we can easily identify the human penman, but let us never forget or doubt that the Divine Author is God! Solomon was the human penman of Proverbs but God is the Divine Author. In the first four verses God gives His reasons for the book. That the reader may:1. “Know wisdom and instruction”2. “Perceive the words of understanding”3. “Receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, judgment, and equity”4. “Give subtlety to the simple”5. Give “the young man knowledge and instruction”Quickly let me define some of the above terms.Wisdom- skill, prudenceUnderstanding- discernmentInstruction- disciplineJustice- rightness (especially in government)Judgment- decision ofEquity- uprightnessSubtlety- prudenceKnowledge- perceptionDiscretion- purposePut it all together and one can easily see God gave the world a very practical book in which to live by. It is too bad and very sad more people do not try to live by it. The book of Proverbs is very worthy of our reading and study.
