USS Lexington (CV 2), pictured here in the Hawaiian Islands during fleet maneuvers in 1932, was commissioned #OTD in 1927. With their size, speed and ability to operate a large number of aircraft, "Lady Lex" and her sister ship, USS Saratoga (CV 3), provided Naval Aviation proponents the platform to demonstrate the offensive capabilities of the aircraft carrier.
