Revisiting the School System: A Call for Genuine Education Over Indoctrination
The current schooling system often misses the mark on what education should truly be. Here's why we need a significant overhaul.
My experience with public education was dominated by fear-based teachings—alcohol making you an instant drunk, smoking inevitably leading to cancer, and environmental hazards presented as apocalyptic. This isn't education; it's indoctrination. Schools should foster curiosity and critical thinking, not fear.
The history I was taught was riddled with errors. Education should be about truth, not myths. We need schools to teach history accurately, providing a complete picture.
The focus should be on foundational skills taught well, not diluted by subjects with little practical or intellectual value.
Advanced or specialized education should be pursued in higher education or, through personal interest, not forced upon children too young to appreciate or benefit from it.
Cutting arts and music from schools is a mistake. These subjects are crucial for holistic development, fostering creativity, discipline, and cognitive skills. They should be prioritized, not sacrificed for subjects that are less engaging or relevant.
Schools can be self-sufficient. Sporting events could generate income through food sales, art could be sold if of high quality, and music could be recorded and distributed. This would not only fund schools but also teach students real-world skills in entrepreneurship and marketing.
The government should step back from dictating every detail of what's taught. Local communities and educators understand their needs better, allowing for education that's relevant.
Schools should be places where students learn to question, debate, and analyze. Education should equip students to navigate a complex world, not just memorize facts.
My transition to homeschooling showed me the value of education tailored to the individual. It can provide a moral compass, integrate personal interests like music, and offer a curriculum that's both challenging and rooted in reality, not indoctrination.
The school system needs to evolve to truly educate, not indoctrinate. We must foster environments where students learn to think for themselves, value their culture and history, and develop into well-rounded individuals ready for life's challenges, not just standardized tests.
