SelfMark 8:34“And when he had called the people unto him with his disciples also, he said unto them, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.“The greatest hindrance to any man or woman from being the Christian that Jesus wants them to be is self. Self is always getting in our way. In Mark chapter 10 we read of a young man who came to Jesus seeking eternal life. Jesus offered him more than what he asked for, He also offered him a life of discipleship following the Lord. In verses 21 and 22 we read Jesus’s invitation to the man and the man’s rejection of Jesus.Mark 10:21-22“Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me. And he was sad at that saying, and went away grieved: for he had great possessions.”It wasn’t this man’s possessions that got in his way, it was self that got in the way. The man would not deny himself. If one is to come after Jesus, if one is going to take up the cross, if one is going to truly follow Jesus, he will have to deny self. The Biblical word deny is defined as “to affirm that one has no acquaintance or connection with someone, and to forget one's self, lose sight of one's self and one's own interests.” (Strong’s Concordance) If one truly desires to daily follow Jesus, he or she will daily have to deny self. That is not always easy, because self is always asking for so much.
