"THE WALK THAT PLEASES GOD"
"And Enoch lived sixty and five years, and begat Methuselah:
And Enoch walked with God after he begat Methuselah three hundred years, and begat sons and daughters:
And all the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty and five years:
And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him."(Genesis 5:21-24)
We can't help but notice that repeated phrase found in this 5th chapter, "And he died' which underscores the consequence of sin introduced back in Genesis 3. Despite long lifespans several folks enjoyed, death was inevitable, reminding us of the penalty that sin brings.
At the age of 65, verse 22 here tells us about a man called Enoch who began his walk with God following the birth of a son named Methuselah. That birth seems to have had a profound influence on Enoch. After that he walked with God. Faith will enable us to do the same, because it makes the unseen visible and in Enoch's case, that walk lasted some 300 years until God took him home to Heaven.
Think of it; 300 years spent walking with God. He simply walked with God everywhere he went. He was never ashamed to have God while he journeyed around the countryside. So intimate was his relationship that one day he just kept walking till he walked right into the very Presence of God. For 3 centuries, he walked and walked and walked with God and I believe that God was "pleased" to walk with him as well.
If someone were to have followed Enoch around for those 300 years back then without him knowing about it, and observed all that he did, all that he talked about, and everywhere he went, surely, they would have come to the conclusion that whatever Enoch had going on with the Lord, I wish I had the same spiritual spring in my steps.
But wait just a minute now. Oh, what if someone were to follow us around for just 30 days unaware that we were being tailed and observed all that we did, and all that we talked about, and everywhere we went. Would they come to the same conclusion about us where they did with Enoch that whatever we have I wished I had it; or would it be something like, if that's Christianity, then pal, you can have it. For I certainly don't want anything to do with you and your God! I'm sure there are plenty of lost folks who would say something similar to that about a number of lukewarm Christians these days.
The Word of God is replete with how we are walk with God. Space doesn't permit a long list, so here's just four that we can chew on for now:
1. Psalm 26:11 tells us, "I will walk in mine integrity."
2. We are to "walk uprightly" (Psalm 84;11).
3. We are to "walk not in the flesh, but after the Spirit." (Romans 8:1).
4. Remember that young beloved disciple that leaned on learned many truths from Jesus? Well, he wrote: "He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked." (1 John 2:6)
Now folks hold your puckering string before you start writing your comments. To be sure, that's in no way shape or form that much heralded "Lifestyle Evangelism" stuff. My walk with God, or your walk with God isn't going to save anyone. That which I'm talking about is simply walking with that lifestyle that pleases God. That is indeed the Christ-like lifestyle! And we're not walking like that to be saved, we're walking like that because we are saved!
Friends, each and every one of us need to take a long hard look at our walk with God. May I kindly ask, is ours that one where He is "pleased" to walk with us?
