The Choice Of Disbelief
John 3:18-21
“He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.”
The word condemn carries the meaning of passing an opinion or judgment. You have heard people say, “You are judging me, or Don’t judge me”. In our verses we find that one’s choice to “believeth not” is what truly condemns them or judges them. The true judgment of this world is the truth that Light or Jesus Christ has come into the darkness and the fact that some people love darkness rather than Christ.
I am seeing two things in America today.
One is with many there is an infatuation with darkness or evil.
The second is the same people who have an infatuation with darkness carry a hatred for Light or that which is represented by Jesus Christ.
Why such a great hatred for Christ and true Christianity?
What are they so afraid of?
Our text gives us the answer, their deeds are evil and they do not want their deeds reproved (conviction of). Just as it was my choice to come to the Light or Christ it is another person’s choice to not come to Christ. Those who choose to not come to Christ are judged by their refusal to come to Christ and with any judgment there is a sentencing. The sentence for refusing Jesus Christ is an eternity in Hell (Revelation 20:15).
