The Day AfterFor several days now I have written on the subject of the birth of Christ or Christmas. Today’s devotion will be the last of this series. I know how this day after Christmas will go for many people 🤪, but I wonder what the day after Jesus was born was like for Joseph, Mary, and the baby Jesus. The Scriptures are silent upon this thought. Matthew goes from Jesus being born in chapter 1 to chapter 2 where the wise men come to see and worship the young child Jesus (most likely around the age of 2) in a house somewhere in Bethlehem (Matthew 2:1-11). Luke’s gospel in chapter 2 records His birth and between verses 20 and 21 we miss days 2 to 7 and jump to the eighth day in which Jesus was brought to the temple to fulfill the law of Moses for both Him and Mary’s purification. We are left to speculate what the day after would have been like for this three person family of Joseph, Mary, and Jesus. Was Mary and Joseph overly protective new parents? How long did it take for them to settle into some kind of routine? And how routine could you be and was there a need to be overly protective when your son is the Son of God?Seems like the biggest hurdle in Joseph and Mary’s parenting of Jesus would be their faith and as a parent myself I can relate with that.Luke 2:16-20 tells us,“And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child. And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds. But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.”I find here three things that happened the day after Jesus’s birth. There was pondering (Mary), the praising of God, and the proclamation of what was heard and seen.I think this is the way for us to approach today and everyday of the Christian life.Ponder all truths about Jesus!Praise God for His grace and goodness! And go out and proclaim to any and all who will listen that Jesus Christ has come into our world to seek and to save the lost!
