The First Promise of Christmas
The news in America the last few days and weeks have once again reminded me of the evil and brokenness of the days in which we live in. But if one will only open their eyes to the Biblical scenes of Christmas you will be reminded that we still have hope.
The first tragedy of evil that ever took place was in the Garden of Eden when Adam and Eve disobeyed God’s command. Being tempted by the serpent (Satan), Eve partook of the fruit and then gave to her husband and he did eat (Genesis 3:6). Their disobedience that day had a repercussion effect that has not been equaled since. Adam’s disobedience plunged the entire human race into sin and the penalty of death.
Romans 5:12 - “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:”
God intervened that day and made a promise to both the serpent and Eve that brought hope among the tragedy of sin.
Genesis 3:15 - “And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.”
The reference in this verse to the seed of the woman gives us the first prophetic mention of the coming of Jesus Christ through the seed of the woman and His complete victory over evil! That day God introduced His plan for redemption. The bruising of his heel represents the temporary wound and suffering of Christ but the bruising of his head speaks of a complete and fatal defeat of sin and Satan. At times in our world it looks like evil is prevailing and all hope is completely gone. But all one has to do is to look and see that Christ Jesus came into this world born of a virgin, lived among us, paying sin’s penalty through the shedding of blood as He died on a cross, was buried, but rose again the third day!!
Christmas reminds me that HOPE lives and reigns through Jesus Christ! Oh, there’s more hope to come because Jesus Christ is coming again!
