"WAIT ON THE LORD, THOU SHALT SEE IT"
"Wait on the LORD, and keep his way, and he shall exalt thee to inherit the land: when the wicked are cut off, thou shalt see it." (Psalm 37:34)
Whenever I read this verse, that faithful old warrior Caleb comes to mind. Have you been waiting a long time for God to fulfill a promise in your life? Well, Caleb waited forty-five years.
When the twelve spies had returned from their trip into Canaan, only Joshua and Caleb had encouraged the people to obey God and enter the Promised Land, but the report of the other ten spies had prompted the people to rebel against God. Therefore, God disciplined the Israelites by causing them to wander in the wilderness some forty years.
In Numbers 14:24, God had spoken to Caleb through Moses and said, “But my servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and hath followed me fully, him will I bring into the land whereinto he went; and his seed shall possess it." Caleb held on to that promise for the next four decades. He and Joshua witnessed the deaths of the rebellious generation and then they led the new generation into Canaan and claimed the inheritance that God had promised to give them.
When the Canaanites had been defeated, Caleb came to Joshua and reminded him of God’s word in Joshua 14:12, "Now therefore give me this mountain, whereof the LORD spake in that day; for thou heardest in that day how the Anakims were there, and that the cities were great and fenced: if so be the LORD will be with me, then I shall be able to drive them out, as the LORD said."
Now the Anakims were the giants who had terrified the ten other spies so many years earlier, but old Caleb was no more afraid of those big galoots at age 85 than he had been at age 40. He declared, “...if so be the LORD will be with me, then I shall be able to drive them out." And friends, that’s exactly what happened in Joshua 15:13-15.
Whatever situation we've been praying about, waiting on God to fulfill His promises is difficult, and yet, that's exactly what our Lord calls us to do. Five times the Bible states that Caleb "wholly followed the LORD." After a lifetime of obedience, Caleb received the inheritance God had promised him.
God has also promised us an inheritance and it is indeed one that will far exceed all our expectations. Are we willing to live by faith as Caleb did and walk in complete obedience as we wait for it? If so, then like Caleb, let it be said of us that we "wholly followed the LORD."
Friends, when we begin with that first part of Psalm 37:34, "Wait on the LORD, and keep his way" the last part will surely follow, "thou shalt see it."
