Christmas, Children, & Jesus
(Part 1)
Matthew 19:13-14
“Then were there brought unto him little children, that he should put his hands on them, and pray: and the disciples rebuked them. But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven.”
Every time I read this passage I wonder what were these disciples thinking?!
How could they rebuke these parents, grandparents (whoever they were) for bringing these children unto Jesus?
Jesus very quickly let them and all the world know that we better not send children away or hinder children in coming unto Him. In the previous chapter (Matthew 18:6, 7) He pronounced a dreadful woe to any who tried to hinder children from coming to Him.
I believe Christmas is a great time to tell children about Jesus. Most children are by nature inquisitive. They want to know the whys, and hows, and what fors. They ask questions. When they learn to read and read a sign they comment and ask questions. And at this time of the year there are so many things that point us in the direction of Jesus Christ and give children reason to talk about Him. Let me encourage all you parents and grandparents that when they begin to ask you questions about Christmas, please tell them the truth!!
In the busyness of the next few days and when the children get out of school, there will be the temptation to push them out of your way. When they ask a question, you might be tempted to answer, “Not now.”
What I am trying to say is, this year at Christmas please keep your eyes and ears open for those inquisitive moments with children. It may turn out to be your personal highlight moment of this year’s Christmas!
