Do You Believe in The Light?John 1:4-7“In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.”Everywhere you go in the night this time of the year you see Christmas lights. Some of them are quite beautiful. I was thinking the other day that usually about this time of the year my Pawpaw Perkins would want me to come over and hang his Star of Bethlehem on their front porch. It was actually a Moravian Star, but he called it the Star of Bethlehem. And back then, I wasn’t about to argue with him about the name! The history of the Moravian Star says that it originated sometime in the 1830s from a Moravian Boys School in Niesky, Germany through a geometry lesson. It was made to represent the Star of Bethlehem (Pawpaw was right), with the many points signifying God’s universal love and light reaching out to all people. The Moravian church website says, “the star reminds us of God, who caused the light to shine out of darkness and of the light which is the life of humanity”.The Gospel of John tells us that there was a Light (Jesus Christ) that shined in the world’s darkness, but the darkness comprehended it not. John the Baptist preached about that Light, so “that all men through him might believe”. Us preachers could learn a lesson from John. If we preached more about the Light and less about ourselves we might see more people believe in Jesus. Every year at this time the world is reminded of the Light (Jesus) that came in the darkness and throughout all these years the truth remains that the Light came into the world that all might believe.Do you believe?
