The Faith of JosephMatthew 1:18-20 - “Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily. But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.”One cannot imagine all the thoughts from Joseph’s mind that fit into that one phrase “while he thought on these things”.We do know that within those thoughts he was “minded to put her (Mary) away privily”. Joseph was a gentleman, and no doubt loved Mary. But how could he go through with a marriage to a woman to whom he perceived had been unfaithful?The visit from the angel of the Lord gave Joseph a word from God explaining what was taking place. Joseph had a choice, would he act upon that word with faith in God?Matthew 1:24 - “Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife:”Joseph believed. Here we have this young couple believing God for the things which He is doing in their lives concerning Jesus. They are submissive, obedient, and at peace as they trust God’s plan for their life as husband and wife. So many married couples could learn from their simple faith in God!Todays and yesterday’s devotions show us that Mary and Joseph believed God. Their faith in God brought them together to allow God’s will concerning Jesus Christ to be accomplished. Faith in God should always bring a married couple together, not drive them apart. Would to God that more married couples, husbands and wives would believe God.
