We were just gaining a toehold on getting out of the Great Depression of the 1930s. Granted, some areas were worse off than others, but with Roosevelt's Works Progress Administration (WPA) and other programs, people were going back to work. However, there were storm clouds brewing in Europe and Asia, and conflicts yet to be were on the horizon.
